About
the Group
Motorcyclists
are amongst the most vulnerable of all road users. In NSW the fatality risk for a
motorcycle rider has been calculated as being 23 times greater than for a car driver
(Motorcycle Safety, Issues and Countermeasures, RTA 2004). With the Snowy Mountains
publicised both nationally and internationally as a fantastic place to ride, the number
of motorcyclists riding in the area has increased significantly in recent years. This
increase has led to the unfortunate situation where the number of crashes has increased
as well.
In
response to increased motorcycle crashes on local roads, the Snowy Region Motorcycle
Safety Group was formed and consists of a range of stakeholders including: NSW & Victorian
Police, Motorcycle Council of NSW, RTA, National Parks & Wildlife Service, Tourism
Snowy Mountains and motorcycle representatives.
